In Ontario, there has been a significant increase in high-tech jobs in recent years. Foreign tech workers from around the world are opting Canada, especially the province of Ontario as their destination to advance their tech-career. With the booming tech-startups and ideal environment for tech workers to thrive in Ontario, a new dedicated stream for highly skilled workers did not come as a surprise. In the budget 2019, the government of Ontario announced that the provincial nominee program will have a new dedicated tech-immigration program, however, the government is yet to provide more details about the stream, the readers are encouraged to stay tuned with us.
Under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), the province not only has aligned various streams with their labour market needs but have also streamlined it with the federal express entry pool. These enhancements in the OINP is a response to the increasing demand to have highly skilled workers in the market.
The government is making significant investments in quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Professionals like software developers, AI engineers and information systems professionals have better prestigious high-tech jobs in Toronto than in Silicon Valley, as per the new report from CBRE. Approximately 241,400 people held tech occupations in Toronto as of 2017, according to the real estate firm's annual ranking of North American tech talent, representing an increase of more than 50 per cent since 2012.

The OINP tech-worker stream follows the successful federal stream called “Global Talent Stream” under the Global Skills Strategy. The province of British Columbia was the first province to have a dedicated stream to prioritize the intake of highly skilled tech workers in BC through their nomination program. Ontario will become the second province to have its own dedicated stream to offer residency through the province’s nomination.
Global Skills Strategy was launched in 2017 in Canada to facilitate the process for companies in Canada to hire highly-skilled foreign workers. Many highly-skilled immigrants, including tech-workers, are trying to explore their options in Canada, leaving the United States due to its restrictive immigration policies to move and settle in Toronto. Canada is using this opportunity to secure more tech-workforce by offering flexible immigration options.
With these advancements in the immigration programs, both federally and provincially, Canada becomes an ideal option for foreign tech-workers to come and settle here.
