What were the most requested jobs for LMIA approvals in 2023?
To work in Canada temporarily, you usually need a work permit. There’s a special kind of work permit called an Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) permit. This is for jobs that companies are really struggling to fill with Canadians. The government checks to make sure hiring you won’t hurt Canadian workers, then approves the LMIA permit.
Many jobs in high demand, like software engineers or chefs, often use LMIA permits. This is because there just aren’t enough Canadians to do these jobs right now!
What is a Labour Market Impact Assessment?
Canadian employers might need an LMIA to hire foreign workers. This document confirms there are no available Canadians for the job. Once approved, the foreign worker can apply for a work permit using the LMIA and a job offer.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s needed for the work permit application:
- Job offer letter
- Employment contract (if applicable)
- Copy of the LMIA
- LMIA number

Job categories and codes used in this discussion are based on Canada’s National Occupation Classification (NOC) system. These codes got more specific in 2021, with some jobs like “General farm workers” divided into more detailed categories.
Many LMIAs in 2023 were for jobs in administration, construction, farming, technology, transportation, and food service. The government issued over 60,000 LMIAs, with work permits coming from different programs based on job type and pay.
What are some ways newcomers could benefit from this information?
For newcomers seeking an LMIA work permit, a few key points can be helpful. First, be open to a variety of job options. Look for roles that have a history of receiving LMIAs. This will increase your chances of finding an employer who can support your work permit application.
Secondly, the employer you apply with will handle the LMIA application process and its costs. There’s no need to worry about this burden falling on you.
However, it’s important to remember that LMIAs follow the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) rules. Therefore, employers must follow advertising requirements and other guidelines set by the program.
Finally, be aware that Canada updated the TFWP program in March 2024. These updates include changes to LMIA validity and foreign worker quotas. It’s a good idea to research these updates for the latest information to ensure a smooth application process.
