Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced later this year that it will scrap its controversial randomized selection process for its Parents and Grandparents Program in 2019 and revert to a first come-first served approach to inviting interested sponsors to apply. They also provided they will accept up to 20,000 new sponsorship applications next year through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Is that not one of the best steps of the Government towards its goal of uniting families in Canada.

Now the question arises - Who’s eligible?

Sponsor: In order to be eligible to sponsor parents and grandparents to become a permanent resident, applicants must be:

     - At least 18 years old; and

     - A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada

If you sponsor your parents and grandparents to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you must:

  • Support that person financially
  • Meet the minimum necessary income level for this program by submitting notices of assessment issued by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) in support of their sponsorship,
  • The sponsor and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits the sponsor to provide financial support for the sponsored person for up to 20 years, and
  • Sponsors must also demonstrate they have met the minimum necessary income level for three consecutive years. If married or in a common-law relationship, the income of both persons can be included;

The minimum Federal Income Level for the year 2018 is not yet released by the Government officials on the IRCC website. However, depending on the previous years’ assessments of the income requirement, it can be expected to range between $40,000 (for a family size of two persons) to $87,000 (for a family of 7 persons)

Note: Potential sponsors who live in Quebec must also meet Quebec’s immigration sponsorship requirements after IRCC approves them as a sponsor.

If you meet the above requirements, do not wait to book appointment with our office. And, in case you are falling short in any of the above listed requirements, you need not feel sad. Because the other way for reducing the distance between you and your parents is the application for the super visa of parents.

For Super Visa:

APPLICANT: To be eligible for the super visa, they must:

1 - be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

2 - have a signed letter from the child or grandchild who invites you to Canada that includes:

  • a promise of financial support for the duration of your visit
  • the list and number of people in the household of this person
  • a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

3 - have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:

  • valid for at least one year from the date of entry
  • at least $100,000 for minimum coverage
  • have proof that the medical insurance has been paid (quotes aren’t accepted)

You must also:

  • be allowed to enter Canada
  • take an immigration medical exam
  • meet certain other conditions
